Chapter 14
The road ahead of them was clear, and it wouldnât be long until they would reach the Finnish border. They wouldnât pass through the Russian checkpoint. Instead, theyâd have to stop somewhere short and help Justin get over by an unofficial crossing. Once in Finland, Anna had allies, people she could call upon. They could get a boat back to England and then up to Scotland. They may even fly.
The team were in a blue car and they kept their speed low so as not to attract attention. In truth, they seemed to be so far away from anyone that there was no attention to garner, and Kirsten was breathing easily as she drove along the roads. Beside her, Anna Hunt was deep in contemplation.
Justin was in the rear seat. His foot was still up in the air as best he could put it. He could hobble on it, but he wanted it well-rested before he had to travel across rough ground. His wound had failed to go septic though they checked it a few times, but the bandages in place were not for removing, not till he got to Finland. Once there, he could get better medical help.
The day turned from a cold but bright one into the dark night, the headlights sweeping the road ahead. Kirsten looked at her phone that showed there would be a turnoff soon, a track to go down. Theyâd follow the track until it got parallel with the border about a mile out. From there, they would have a two-mile walk to find the road on the other side. Once over the border, Anna Hunt would call someone from her past who would help them.
Kirsten appreciated that most of this couldnât have been done without Anna. Sheâd been in the Service so long, had travelled to so many placesâespecially Russiaâthat contacts were available. Kirsten always had to make them. She hadnât been back to where sheâd been before. In fact, she hadnât been abroad that many times, either working for or within the Service.
âIs now a good time to talk about what Morozov said?â asked Kirsten.
Anna glared over. âYes,â she said, âof course. Sorry, Iâve been a little . . .â Kirsten put her hand across, touching Annaâs.
âIs there something I donât know about?â asked Justin. âYouâve all been quiet, very.â
âWhen they held me at the headquarters,â said Anna, âthey . . .â
A tear ran down her face, followed by another, and she looked across at Kirsten. Kirsten was trying to drive, not miss her turn, and also felt so deeply for Anna she wanted to hug her. She turned the car off the road and stopped.
âDear God,â said Justin, âIâm sorry.â
Anna gave him a nod. âBut he wonât do that to anyone else,â she said. âHe wonât do that.â
âWeâll get you help,â said Kirsten. âWeâll sort that out once weâre done, once all of this is sorted.â
Justin was quiet, waiting for the moment between the two women to subside, but as the silence went on, he spoke up.
